TOPPER OPEN 2010
25 April 2010
Report by Tony Williams
36 Topper sailors from across the south west assembled on Sunday 25th April at Frampton on Severn Sailing Club for its 2010 Topper Open and SW Traveler.
From a promising start, the wind built over the course of the morning to a steady (by Frampton standards) force 3 gusting 4 for the afternoon’s 2 races.
The OOD, Ken Elsey, deployed the black flag after a general recall on the first race and it ensured clean starts for all the races. The convoluted courses failed to confuse all but one competitor – a certain Mr Richard Hole, who admitted later to having a senior moment on the memory front.
All 4 races were closely contested, with most places changing and rechanging during each of the 4 races, and different winners in each race. Equal on points, the overall result was decided on the last race placings with Ed Jones winning on countback from Tom Sully.
Towards the middle and back of the fleet there was no shortage of potential shown by the less experienced helms, in particular Bella Fellows who was the youngest competitor to complete all the races coming a creditable 26th overall.
Tom Sully was awarded the Ruth Tranter Trophy for being Frampton’s best junior.
