<span style="font-size:14px">On Saturday 17th March, I was impressed in the dedication of the group of volunteers who turned up to make sausages out of barley straw. The weather was so bad that we had to work in the boat house and have the main door almost closed so as to keep the icy cold wind out.<br>
Roll the calendar forwards four weeks to Saturday 14th April and everyone was in front of the club house celebrating the formal opening of the second phase of the club refurbishment in sunshine, could spring have finally arrived, I dare ask !<br>
The Fitting out supper took place on the evening of 24th March with an attendance of over 30 guests, including a family who had only just joined the club. Rhonwen had declared a “yellow theme” for the evening, so given that she has a Welsh name, one of the new junior members recited Wordsworth’s daffodil poem from memory! <br>
Congratulations to Rhonwen for organising an excellent event.<br>
The official opening of phase two of the club’s refurbishment took place on Saturday 14th April. During the previous week the regular volunteers had tidied up the area in front of the building and pressure washed the concrete to clean the area up. As the sun came out on Saturday, the event was held outside. Formal recognition was given by Ian Cook and myself to the core of regular volunteers who have spent the past fourteen months making it happen. John Veale, the club’s president, cut the ribbon so the new ladies changing room and disabled facilities are now open for business. Between now and the end of September, the old ladies changing rooms will be available as an overflow area for gents changing.<br>
At the end of the formal opening, some copies of the draft drawing for the refurbishment of the existing gents and ladies changing area were circulated for members to comment on. A copy of this draft plan will be included later in this months’ newsletter and I would welcome any constructive feedback, either when I am at FOSSC or via email, during the next month so that we can then start drawing up firm plans and costing the work. <br>
The barley straw work has been completed over the planned two Saturday sessions. During the first session, the volunteers, ranging from age eight upwards, worked in very cold and uncomfortable conditions to produce about a hundred sausages from two tonnes of barley straw. A few of these were placed around the edge of the lake during the first session so as to learn the best way of doing it.<br>
The weather for the second Saturday was kinder to us and with the use of three boats, by 12:30 all of the straw sausages had been positioned around the lake, some of which was supervised by the ducks (take a look at the pictures on the Facebook site). Almost all of these have now sunk down in the water to release their natural chemicals.<br>
The new junior club held its first meeting between 14:00 and 16:30 on Saturday 14th April. This club is open to any junior member of FOSSC who are in school year 6 or above and have successfully completed the YSS level 2 (Gull course) or Oppie equivalent. There are no costs associated with this club but a parent/guardian is required to be in attendance (on the FOSSC site). A total of thirteen juniors participated in the session which started with some knot tying practice and races, followed by boat rigging and sailing across the lake. After a refreshment break it was water based games similar to those played during junior week.<br>
Future meetings will start at 12:30, the next one being on Saturday 05 May, hope to see you there.<br>

FOSSC Junior week is now open for applications. The event will be run between Monday 30th July to Friday 3rd August. Further details will be available soon. Sailability has started and will run through to the end of September. The sessions normally run on a Saturday morning between 09:30 and 12:00 but move to a Tuesday evening whilst the junior training courses take place on a Saturday. I am pleased to see more of our junior members volunteering to help this year, but David Greenfield would be more than happy to welcome any additional volunteers to assist with this activity.<br>
As I have mentioned previously, any junior members who are considering following the Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) scheme can use sailability as their “volunteering” activity. There is great satisfaction to be had from supporting this activity and you will even get the opportunity to sail some different types of boat (the ones that look like mini submarines parked at the side of the boat shed)<br>
Social Sailing will start on Friday 4th May at 18:30 and continue every Friday evening until the end of August. This is an evening for members of all age groups to come and enjoy sailing and socialise. A safety boat will be made available provided that the weather is suitable. Once launched, our new members, who have recently qualified, are able to request a club boat for their use if needed. Groups of younger members often get together to sail and practice their skills. <br>
Now that the current phase of refurbishment has been completed, we are intending to provide more seating in the area between the club and the lake for your use. If you bring your own food along there are two microwaves, an oven and hot water available. There is also a portable charcoal barbecue which is kept inside the boat house that you can use. My family often find this a relaxing way to finish the week.<br>
<br>
As a final note, Ken Elsey and others have been doing a lot of technical work behind the scenes lately. All of the IT equipment has been moved into the new upstairs office/training room area and the security cameras have been upgraded.<br>
This morning I have seen pictures from the new cameras of the lake and the grass area between the club house and boat house. The pictures are much clearer, well done Ken.<br>

<span style="font-size:14px">During the official opening of the Phase II refurbishment of FOSSC on Saturday 14<sup>th</sup> April, the opportunity was taken to show members our initial ideas for the next phase. This covers the refurbishment of the existing gents and ladies changing facilities, so that firm plans can be drawn up, costed and presented to the membership for approval.<br>
Whilst some valuable feedback was gained during Saturday, several members asked if the draft plan could be included in the April newsletter so that a more detailed look at the plan can be taken.<br>
The plan covers both phase III and a possible further phase which will be to install a disability lift up to the upstairs social area which includes moving the staircase. We would want to re-position the corridor wall at this time so that once we have completed the work on the new gents changing facilities, we don’t need to go back and alter anything.<br>
If you have any problems in understanding the plan, please contact David Coates, Ian Cook or John Jordan, either by email or in person when at the club.<br>
Please could I ask that you provide your comments/feedback to us by Monday 14<sup>th</sup> May so that they can be reviewed, discussed and potentially incorporated into the plan before a schedule and costings for the work are produced.<br>

<span style="font-size:14px">We are now into the season proper and if you've not sailed yet it's time to get the boat dusted down and out on the water. To be fair the “Spring” has been late arriving, and the weather a bit uninspiring, until yesterday. I was helping with sailtraining, and for the first time felt decidedly overdressed.<br>
<br>
So far there have been few really notable events to report, but your sailing committee do have an unusual decision to discuss and resolve. The West Country Breweries Club Championship event on 18th March, fell foul of the Weather, and was not sailed. We therefore need to decide whether to drop the event, or re-arrange the date. And if so decide when and how it can be fitted in.<br>
<br>
This brings me to a topic which has been touched on before, that is the number of vacancies on the sailing committee.<br>
<br>
Firstly we need to consider what the sailing committee exists for. Well it acts on behalf of the club (main committee) to consider and advise on all matters related to sailing. Additionally it handles the day to organisation of any club sailing events.<br>
<br>
This is achieved by a composition made up of class captains, plus representatives of other key departments e.g. Bosuns, sailabilty etc.<br>
<br>
With vacancies for a number of class captains, as a committee we are limited, since there is a small<br>
<br>
pool of opinions to represent all sections of the club. Also some functions of the sailing committee are simply not covered.<br>
<br>
Currently we are “missing” captains to represent the Oppi, Topper, B Moth and Mirror classes.<br>
<br>
To adress this shortfall, the main committee has asked me to produce some notes on the duties / responsibilities of class captains. Whilst that is a bit like How Long Is A Piece of String?<br>
<br>
In short the duties of a class captain include:<br>
<br>
Represent their class at sailing committee meetings (usually about 4 per year)<br>
<br>
Act as liason between the club and there class association.<br>
<br>
Act as focal point in organising their class open meeting ( classes with no class captain are not necessarily entitled to an open).<br>
<br>
Act as liason between the club, and their class members in support of club activities. e.g. in encouraging members to assist in staging events outside their class, such as taster day etc.<br>
<br>
Whilst there is a minimum level, the class captain can make a huge difference with their<br>
<br>
involvement. Both for the club, but especially for their class.<br>
<br>
PLEASE CONSIDER WHETHER YOU COULD STEP FORWARD AND HELP THE SAILING COMMITTEE GET BACK ON COURSE. The clubhouse developments, opened this weekend, has shown what can be done with a bit of enthusiasm and togetherness. The same attitude to the sailing organisation could make similar progress on the water.<br>

<span style="font-size:14px">We had a wonderful 'yellow' time at the Fitting Out Supper at the end of March. Thirty-one members tucked in to a meal provided by Ley Bistro (from Frampton), and there was also local Gloucester bitter to enjoy. Some participated in the 'yellow' theme by wearing daffodils or yellow(ish) clothing and then there was the 'yellow' entertainment: FOSSC has its very own comedian in Keith Hill who told 'yellow' jokes; an orator in new junior member Jack Dryer who recited Wordsworth's Daffodils from memory; a poet, Stuart Peoples, who managed to weave 'dubious virtue' into a 'yellow' limerick (with help from others on his table); and a small 'choir' who sang Yellow Rose of Texas, led ably by Pam Greenfield. We all had fun and thanks to all who helped, whether setting out tables, serving behind the bar, providing daffodils for the tables, or tidying up afterwards - every little bit was much appreciated and made it so much easier and more enjoyable for me!<br>

<span style="font-size:14px">Dear All, A little late with this note however those who have not<br>
yet spotted the briefcase with 2018 stickers, it is in the bar area on<br>
the club house first floor.<br>
The case is sectioned into alphabetical compartments by surname so<br>
locating your envelope should hopefully be straightforward.<br>
As advised some weeks ago we are adopting an all weather label<br>
which is a much lighter material & Henry has laser printed them with<br>
logo, membership number & berth.<br>
2 labels per berth have been supplied in case one proves a bit fiddly<br>
but if you are able to use both that would be all to the good. Any<br>
email feedback appreciated.<br>
Your collection of the stickers will save the club a considerable<br>
amount postage wise & we would be grateful if they can be<br>
prominently displayed on your dinghy/trolley as soon as possible<br>
please.<br>
I will manually prepare stickers for new berth holders not on the<br>
audit when the print was actioned so do let me know if you need that<br>
done.<br>

<span>Dear Members,<br>
I’m one of the operational crew members at Sharpness Lifeboat Station, one of five stations operated by the Severn Area Rescue Association. At Sharpness, we provide a lifeboat search-and-rescue service on the Severn Estuary between Gloucester and the Severn Bridges – one of the most challenging waterways in the UK, as you are no doubt aware. We also provide a flood-rescue service and – when called on – respond to flood emergencies across the UK. <br>
<br>
We are currently recruiting a volunteer fundraising crew at Sharpness to help with our street collections – people who are willing to be our ambassadors, working alongside the operational crew, collecting donations from the residents of local communities (Stroud, Gloucester, Dursley, etc). We are looking for people who are 18+, enthusiastic, willing to tell our story to the public – and able to give about 20 hours of their time over the year to help raise essential funds to keep the lifeboat station operational.<br>
<br>
Do you think that some of your club members might be interested in becoming volunteer fundraisers? In return, they will be given:<br>

• a uniform for when street-collecting with us<br>
• an introduction to the operations of the lifeboat crew at Sharpness<br>
• the occasional opportunity to go out on one of the lifeboats<br>
• the opportunity to be part of the social life of the lifeboat station.</span></div>

And for those with an interest and aptitude, there could also be the opportunity to progress to full operational crew in the future.<br>

I am initially contacting organisations that already have some connection with the waterways that we cover, including local sailing and rowing clubs – hence my approach to you. As you will see below, Ken Elsey suggested that you would be the best person to contact. <br>

Anything you can do to help with this would be really appreciated. We have posters ready for display – additionally we have a website set up that contains more details and an online application form. And please give me a call if you would like to talk anything through. <br>
